A Prayer of Repentance Against the Idol of Security and Passivity
Security can quietly become an idol when our greatest goal is to avoid risk, discomfort, conflict, or uncertainty. In Isaiah 31, God called His people to return to Him and reject the idols they had trusted instead of relying upon His power. The temptation is still the same today: when pressure comes, we can scramble for human solutions, retreat into passivity, or wait for someone else to act. But faith does not always lead us toward the safest path; sometimes it calls us to courageously engage the problem before us under the direction of the Holy Spirit. As you pray today, ask God to expose every place where security has replaced obedience, break the power of passivity, and give you the courage to become an active participant in what He wants to accomplish.
Prayer
Lord, I’ve made an idol out of security. I repent of risk-free living. When I’m attacked and besieged just like the Assyria’s did to Jerusalem, give me the grace to cling closer to You. Keep me from franticly looking around for someone else to solve my problems. Will I look to You and say, “Holy Spirit, how are we solving this problem?” I declare, I am willing to take up the sword. I declare, I am willing to face the enemy. I proclaim, I’m willing to be part of the solution to some of the world’s biggest problems. I forsake security and I cling to proactive courage. I break the idol of passivity in my life. I’m stepping into the seat of life engagement. Cowardice is leaving me. Guidance is what I’m seeking. I’m submitting to the leading of the Holy Spirit. My actions are Holy Spirit led in Jesus name, amen.
Isaiah 31:6-9
Return, you Israelites, to the One you have so greatly revolted against. For in that day every one of you will reject the idols of silver and gold your sinful hands have made. “Assyria will fall by no human sword; a sword, not of mortals, will devour them. They will flee before the sword, and their young men will be put to forced labor. Their stronghold will fall because of terror; at the sight of the battle standard their commanders will panic,” declares the Lord, whose fire is in Zion, whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
