A Prayer of Commitment to Trust in the Lord

It is easy to say that we trust God while quietly depending upon people, relationships, resources, influence, and our own ability to protect ourselves. Isaiah 31 confronted Judah for looking to Egypt’s horses and armies instead of looking to the Holy One of Israel. Human strength will always have limits, but the Lord is an unfailing defender of those who place their confidence in Him. He is pictured both as a lion that cannot be intimidated and as a bird hovering protectively over its young. As you pray today, identify the “Egypts” that compete for your trust, surrender them to the Lord, and renew your confidence in His power to guide, defend, and preserve you.

Prayer

Lord, You’re my help. I repent of trusting in my friends, alliances and networks. There are plenty of Egypts where I can place my trust. You’re my firm foundation. Where there’s a lack of trust in my heart, then send Your Spirit to fortify it so the wall of faith will never be breached. You’re my defender. When You resolve to protect me, nothing can touch me. So protect me from temptation, physical harm and demonic attack in the name of Jesus, amen.

Isaiah 31:1-5

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help, who rely on horses, who trust in the multitude of their chariots and in the great strength of their horsemen, but do not look to the Holy One of Israel, or seek help from the Lord. Yet he too is wise and can bring disaster; he does not take back his words. He will rise up against that wicked nation, against those who help evildoers. But the Egyptians are mere mortals and not God; their horses are flesh and not spirit. When the Lord stretches out his hand, those who help will stumble, those who are helped will fall; all will perish together. This is what the Lord says to me: “As a lion growls, a great lion over its prey—and though a whole band of shepherds is called together against it, it is not frightened by their shouts or disturbed by their clamor—so the Lord Almighty will come down to do battle on Mount Zion and on its heights. Like birds hovering overhead, the Lord Almighty will shield Jerusalem; he will shield it and deliver it, he will ‘pass over’ it and will rescue it.”
