A Prayer for when God does do what We Expect
Disappointment is often one of the greatest tests of faith. We naturally expect God to work according to our plans, our timing, and our understanding of what seems best. Yet throughout Scripture, the Lord repeatedly accomplishes His purposes in ways that surprise His people. Isaiah himself experienced the pain of watching events unfold differently than expected, reminding us that even faithful servants must learn to trust God’s wisdom above their own expectations. As you pray today, ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen your faith so that unexpected disappointments deepen your dependence on God rather than diminish your confidence in His goodness and sovereign plan.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, keep from getting discouraged when circumstances don’t go my way. Help me to have the strength of heart to keep trusting You. Judah was hoping that the Babylonian rebellion would lead to Assyrian’s downfall. They thought You were dealing with their greatest threat through Your providence. What they expected of You didn’t materialize. Isaiah was disappointed in the fulfillment of his own prophecy. Most of the time You don’t choose the path that’s the easiest for us. You almost never do what I expect. Build my faith to such an extent that sudden changes in course don’t discourage me. Help me trust in You. I long to be so rooted in Your Word that when my hopes are crushed, then my faith isn’t deterred. Help me to never be overcome with discouragement in the midst of unexpected disappointments in the name of Jesus, the Lord of my faith, amen.
Isaiah 21:1-10
A prophecy against the Desert by the Sea: Like whirlwinds sweeping through the southland, an invader comes from the desert, from a land of terror. A dire vision has been shown to me: The traitor betrays, the looter takes loot. Elam, attack! Media, lay siege! I will bring to an end all the groaning she caused.
At this my body is racked with pain, pangs seize me, like those of a woman in labor; I am staggered by what I hear, I am bewildered by what I see. My heart falters, fear makes me tremble; the twilight I longed for has become a horror to me. They set the tables, they spread the rugs, they eat, they drink! Get up, you officers, oil the shields!
This is what the Lord says to me: “Go, post a lookout and have him report what he sees. When he sees chariots with teams of horses, riders on donkeys or riders on camels, let him be alert, fully alert.” And the lookout shouted, “Day after day, my lord, I stand on the watchtower; every night I stay at my post. Look, here comes a man in a chariot with a team of horses.” And he gives back the answer: “Babylon has fallen, has fallen! All the images of its gods lie shattered on the ground!”
My people who are crushed on the threshing floor, I tell you what I have heard from the Lord Almighty, from the God of Israel.
