A Prayer Asking for a Greater Trust in the Lord

The world constantly urges us to place our confidence in wealth, influence, human wisdom, and political power. Yet Isaiah 19 reminds us how quickly every earthly foundation can crumble when God removes His hand of blessing. Egypt was renowned for its wisdom, military strength, and economic prosperity, but none of these could stand against the Lord’s sovereign purposes. True security is never found in the world’s systems—it is found in trusting God alone. As you pray today, invite the Holy Spirit to expose every misplaced confidence in your heart and to establish your life firmly upon the unchanging wisdom of God’s Word.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to not be tempted by worldly wisdom. Put a pure resolve in me to primarily trust in my heavenly Father. Give me a fear of You that would keep me from trusting in the things that everybody else says are a sure foundation. I declare over my life that the “Fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom (Proverbs 1:7).” Judah was tempted time and time again to trust in Egypt, and time and time again they had to be reminded not to trust in them (Deuteronomy 17:16). So Holy Spirit, remind me over and over again to trust in the Lord. Holy Spirit, give me Your perspective. Idols are not strongholds. They’re only stumbling blocks that You’ll eventually judge. Deliver me of idols. Keep me from ever placing anything on the throne of my heart that’s not You. Many people trust in wealth, but the natural resources where they derive their wealth is dependent upon You. Any river can dry up at any time. Holy Spirit, settle my mind on the correct view of money and resources. You’re the source of it all. Egypt had a great reputation for wisdom, but man’s wisdom is only folly compared to the wisdom of God. Help me to build my life on the wisdom of Your word. The wisdom of God will be the foundation of my life. Help me, with eyes wide open, to realize the world’s system is divided and crumbling. Deliver me from the temptation to trust in it in Jesus name, amen.

Isaiah 19:1-15

A prophecy against Egypt: See, the LORD rides on a swift cloud and is coming to Egypt. The idols of Egypt tremble before him, and the hearts of the Egyptians melt with fear. “I will stir up Egyptian against Egyptian—brother will fight against brother, neighbor against neighbor, city against city, kingdom against kingdom. The Egyptians will lose heart, and I will bring their plans to nothing; they will consult the idols and the spirits of the dead, the mediums and the spiritists. I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them,” declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. 

The waters of the river will dry up, and the riverbed will be parched and dry. The canals will stink; the streams of Egypt will dwindle and dry up. The reeds and rushes will wither, also the plants along the Nile, at the mouth of the river. Every sown field along the Nile will become parched, will blow away and be no more. The fishermen will groan and lament, all who cast hooks into the Nile; those who throw nets on the water will pine away. Those who work with combed flax will despair, the weavers of fine linen will lose hope. The workers in cloth will be dejected, and all the wage earners will be sick at heart. 

The officials of Zoan are nothing but fools; the wise counselors of Pharaoh give senseless advice. How can you say to Pharaoh, “I am one of the wise men, a disciple of the ancient kings”? Where are your wise men now? Let them show you and make known what the LORD Almighty has planned against Egypt. The officials of Zoan have become fools, the leaders of Memphis are deceived; the cornerstones of her peoples have led Egypt astray. The LORD has poured into them a spirit of dizziness; they make Egypt stagger in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers around in his vomit. There is nothing Egypt can do—head or tail, palm branch or reed.
