A Prayer For Strength for Carrying the Burden of the Lord

Immediately after hearing the prophetic vision of the nations praising God, Isaiah’s heart is overwhelmed. Rather than celebrating, he cries, “I waste away!” because he also sees humanity’s rebellion, the coming judgment, and the widespread treachery that fills the earth. Like many of God’s servants throughout Scripture, Isaiah experienced what could be called the burden of the Lord—the heavy weight of seeing the world from God’s perspective. It is the burden that compels believers to pray, preach, warn, love, and persevere even when they are misunderstood or opposed.

Every follower of Christ who takes the Great Commission seriously eventually feels this burden. We carry the urgency of the gospel, the grief of watching people reject Christ, the responsibility of interceding for others, and the labor of advancing God’s kingdom. Yet the Lord never intended us to carry His burden in our own strength. As you pray today, ask the Holy Spirit to strengthen you to faithfully bear the calling He has entrusted to you, refusing to grow weary until His work through your life is complete.

Prayer

Father, the burden of the Lord is heavy: feeling the need of humanity…understanding what’s coming…the gravity of Your judgment…the burden of prayer…the misunderstanding of people…the urgency..the work load…the persecution of others…the eternal perspective! Oh God, it’s not for the faint of heart. Give me the strength and will to never backdown from Your burden. Increase my investment and ownership in Your kingdom. I take my role as an heir so seriously (Romans 8:17 & Galatians 3:29). I gladly accept the burden of the Lord in the name of Jesus, my joint heir.
