It’s normal for Christians to define their relationship with God by what they do. It’s also normal for Christians to define their relationship with God by what they know about God and the Bible. It’s less normal, but still normal for a Christian to define their relationship with God based on their relationship with Christ. However, it’s a rare remnant of people that define their Christianity by their deep friendship and personal history with Christ. We call that intimacy with Christ. The sole purpose of Christ’s death was not just to get us to heaven.  That is true, but there is more than that. Christ died to throw open the Holy of Holies and bring us into His presence. God wants to be our intimate friend.  This prayer based on Phillipians 3:10-17 helps us develop that intimacy with God.  Read this prayer. Make it your own. Prayer

Holy Spirit, I long to know Christ. Reveal Him to me. I long to commune with Him through You.  Destroy my version of Jesus.  I long to know the real Son of God in His power and even in His suffering. I desire way more than saving knowledge of Jesus. I long to know Him deeply.  I will be resurrected, but my intimacy with Him will also ensure a greater resurrection and heavenly reward.  At the time of my death, I long to be Jesus’ best friend.  Seeking Jesus is the real gauge of maturity, and once I’ve started this journey, I’ll never go back.  I ask that my intimacy with You will spread to others and the church will develop a culture of seeking Your face.  I will walk closely with Him by Your grace through the power of His name, amen.

Philippians 3:10-17

I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. All of us, then, who are mature should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently, that too God will make clear to you. Only let us live up to what we have already attained. Join together in following my example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your eyes on those who live as we do.
