A Prayer of Intercession for a Drunken Church
Isaiah 28:7–9 presents a sobering picture of spiritual leaders whose judgment, discernment, and ability to lead had been corrupted by drunkenness. Those who should have been guiding God’s people were staggering themselves, and the result was spiritual confusion and immaturity. This passage challenges us to pray seriously for purity, sobriety, maturity, and Spirit-filled leadership within the Church. As you pray today, intercede for believers and leaders who have become bound by alcohol or other destructive appetites. Ask the Holy Spirit to bring conviction, repentance, freedom, and restoration, and pray that the Church would grow beyond spiritual infancy into the maturity, clarity, and strength God intends for His people.
Prayer
Jesus, I pray that the portion of the church that’s being led astray by alcohol will repent. To their shame, Your people are getting drunk! The people that should be leading are staggering from their beer and wine. Your church stays in infancy! They don’t mature! So Jesus send Your Holy Spirit to cut this stronghold out of Your people. May drunkenness never be seen among us. I pray a heavy spirit of repentance will fall on us. Equip us to rise into our potential in Jesus name, amen.
Isaiah 28:7-9
And these also stagger from wine and reel from beer: priests and prophets stagger from beer and are befuddled with wine; they reel from beer, they stagger when seeing visions, and they stumble when rendering decisions. All the tables are covered with vomit, and there is not a spot without filth. “Who is it he is trying to teach? To whom is he explaining his message? To children weaned from their milk, to those just taken from the breast?”
