A Prayer for Discernment and Discretion
Not everyone who expresses interest in our lives has our best interests at heart, and not everything God has entrusted to us needs to be revealed to others. After Hezekiah’s miraculous recovery, he welcomed visitors from Babylon and unwisely displayed the wealth and treasures of his kingdom. What may have appeared to be a harmless diplomatic exchange exposed valuable information to a foreign power that would eventually become Judah’s enemy. His experience reminds us that wisdom involves both discerning the intentions of others and exercising discretion with what we share. We can love people without being naive, remain transparent without being careless, and demonstrate kindness without abandoning wisdom. This prayer asks the Holy Spirit to sharpen our discernment, strengthen our discretion, and protect us from unnecessary vulnerability.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, give me discernment and discretion. Equip me to not be naive and easily taken advantage of. Teach me to see the motives of others that may not have the best of intentions at heart. Also, give me the discretion to understand that I don’t need to lay all my cards on the table. There’s no need to reveal all my secrets, and I don’t need to cast my pearls before swine (Matthew 7:6). I pray that You’ll give me this wisdom in the name of Jesus, the God of all wisdom, amen.
Isaiah 39:1-4
At that time Marduk-Baladan son of Baladan king of Babylon sent Hezekiah letters and a gift, because he had heard of his illness and recovery. Hezekiah received the envoys gladly and showed them what was in his storehouses—the silver, the gold, the spices, the fine olive oil—his entire armory and everything found among his treasures. There was nothing in his palace or in all his kingdom that Hezekiah did not show them. Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah and asked, “What did those men say, and where did they come from?” “From a distant land,” Hezekiah replied. “They came to me from Babylon.” The prophet asked, “What did they see in your palace?” “They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “There is nothing among my treasures that I did not show them.
