For a disciple to thrive in spiritual growth, they must have the right perspective on church leadership. Their expectation of leaders must be realistic, but even with the shortcomings of spiritual leaders the disciple must still be cooperative and be a team player. It’s also unhealthy for disciples to idolize church leaders. This is corroding to the spiritual health of the leader and the disciple. This prayer seeks to help us strike the correct balance. If this prayer ministers to you, then please pass it along.

Prayer

Jesus, make me an effective leader within the church and raise up other effectual leaders as well. Make the church responsive to its leaders as they endeavor to serve and disciple them. Give Your people a heart for Your word and cause Your word to be powerfully at work within them. Develop in them a love for godly leadership, and may this love cause church members and leaders to find mentors, examples to follow, and models of ministry to copy. Make them effective and fruitful in all things. Stir within them a resolve to endure in the midst of persecution. Even though they love their spiritual leaders, don’t make them dependent upon them. Initiate their pursuit of You within their own hearts. Cause Your people to love You first. Never allow the church leaders to have the top spot in people’s hearts. Prosper Your church. Proser them through other leaders. Prosper them as I serve them, and make my investment into Your people one of my crowning achievements in heaven. Do this in Jesus name, amen.

1 Thessalonians 2:13-20

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as a human word, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is indeed at work in you who believe. For you, brothers and sisters, became imitators of God’s churches in Judea, which are in Christ Jesus: You suffered from your own people the same things those churches suffered from the Jews who killed the Lord Jesus and the prophets and also drove us out. They displease God and are hostile to everyone in their effort to keep us from speaking to the Gentiles so that they may be saved. In this way they always heap up their sins to the limit. The wrath of God has come upon them at last.

But, brothers and sisters, when we were orphaned by being separated from you for a short time (in person, not in thought), out of our intense longing we made every effort to see you. For we wanted to come to you—certainly I, Paul, did, again and again—but Satan blocked our way. For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
