A Prayer Rejecting a Religious Spirit
It is possible to say the right words, participate in worship, and maintain religious traditions while allowing our hearts to drift far from God. Isaiah warns of people who honored the Lord with their lips while their worship had become little more than learned human behavior. God desires more than outward conformity—He desires hearts that genuinely love Him and lives that are shaped by His hands. As you pray today, invite the Holy Spirit to expose empty religion, legalism, hypocrisy, and pride, and ask Him to make you pliable in the hands of God, the Master Potter.
Prayer
Father, I pray that You’ll break a religious spirit in me. Do this within the church as well. Draw our hearts close to You. Make our actions will be an outward expression of an inward love for You. Completely break heartless, thoughtless and compassionless legalism within us. Legalism shuts our ears from hearing what You’re saying, and creates pride and false confidence toward You. It breeds hypocrisy within me and in Your church. So I ask that we’ll be pliable and malleable in Your hands. Shape our hearts, minds, attitudes and behaviors in the name of Jesus, the Master Potter, amen.
Isaiah 29:13-16
The Lord says: “These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is based on merely human rules they have been taught. Therefore once more I will astound these people with wonder upon wonder; the wisdom of the wise will perish, the intelligence of the intelligent will vanish.” Woe to those who go to great depths to hide their plans from the Lord, who do their work in darkness and think, “Who sees us? Who will know?” You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, “You did not make me”? Can the pot say to the potter, “You know nothing”?
