To take on the nature of Christ is the essence of Christian discipleship. We’re to be like Jesus. This prayer takes Colossians 3:5-16, which deals with Christian behavior, and forms it into a prayer that points us to the nature of Christ. Obey the passage. Pray the prayer. Share it with your friends that prioritize Christian discipleship.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, help me to slay the sinful nature. It has no room in my life.  I will start by killing the lust and drive for sexual pleasure outside of marriage, and I will slay every attitude and behavior that ruins relationships and creates discord among people. Then, precious Holy Spirit, cloth me in the very nature of Christ Jesus.  Dress me in compassion, humility and love. By Your grace, I will excel in every practice that promotes healthy relationships: kindness, genteelness, patience, forgiveness and the ability to overlook people’s faults.  Peace will rule my life through Your power and through Your ability to regulate my emotions. I submit to Your leadership through an attitude of thankfulness and allowing the Word of God to percolate, incubate and thrive in me. I’m also going to surround myself with people that are on the same journey as me. We will inspire each other to go further in You.  I’m clothed in Jesus, through the power of His name, amen.

Colossians 3:5-16

Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. Here there is no Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave or free, but Christ is all, and is in all. Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.
