Jesus spoke with urgency about sin—not to shame us, but to show how destructive it really is. His words in Mark 9 call us to radical action, to cut away anything that leads us away from Him. This isn’t about punishment—it’s about purification. God wants to make us whole, holy, and free. As you pray today, ask the Holy Spirit to search your heart and strengthen your resolve to fight against anything that separates you from His presence.

If this prayer helps you refocus your heart, share it with someone who’s in the fight too. We grow stronger when we seek holiness together.

Prayer

Jesus, You’ve called me to take extreme measures against sin. Give me a hatred for sin. Give me an urgency the moment I’m convicted by the Holy Spirit. Compelling me to quickly resolve any errors I make along life’s journey. Give me a determination to fight sin until my last breath. I’ll learn to set myself up for success. You’re looking for more than outward changes. In light of this, I yield to the process of transformation. I submit to a fiery cleansing of the Holy Spirit. Just as the priest added salt to the sacrifice, add salt to my life to cleanse me (Leviticus 2:13). I long to be a pure sacrifice before You (Romans 12:1). You’re my high priest. Consecrate my life as a sweet sacrifice of worship before You. My desire is to live a sin-free life. Deploy every resource of heaven to help me live perfectly before You. Because You’ve given me everything, I long to give everything back to You. It’s in Your name I make this request, amen.

Mark 9:42-50

“If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea.

If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out.

And if your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

And if your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, where ‘the worms that eat them do not die, and the fire is not quenched.’

Everyone will be salted with fire.

“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with each other.”
