When Peter heard that Jesus would suffer, he couldn’t accept it—because like many of us, he wanted a victorious Messiah without a cross. But true discipleship means following Jesus through both triumph and trial. In this passage, Jesus redefines what it means to follow Him: surrendering our will, embracing suffering, and trusting that resurrection always follows obedience. As you read and pray, let God shape your heart into a steadfast follower, and invite others to walk the path of true discipleship by sharing this reflection.
Prayer
Jesus, Peter wanted to reject the way of suffering. He thought the path of discipleship led to fame, recognition, personal glory and governmental influence. Wash these false desires from me. Help me embrace the path of discipleship in suffering and joy. Keep me from shying away from the difficult. I never wish to be cradled and coddled in Christian comfort. I’ll walk the true path and embrace the blessings and the difficulties of following You. Work this within me through the power of Your name, amen.
Mark 8:31-33
He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.”
