In Mark 12:28–34, Jesus cuts through religious complexity and brings us back to the heart of faith: love. When asked to name the greatest commandment, He points us first to wholehearted love for God, and then to a love for others that mirrors how we care for ourselves. This passage exposes how easy it is to profess devotion while struggling to practice compassion. Today’s prayer asks God for the grace to live out this simple yet demanding call—to love Him fully and to love our neighbor faithfully. As you pray, invite the Holy Spirit to shape both your devotion and your relationships.

Prayer

Father, Your commands are simple to understand, but difficult to live out. Right now I lift my hands asking for the grace to love You more than life itself. Grip my heart with Your glory. You’re such a delight and easy to love, but loving my fellow man can be a much greater challenge. So baptize me in love so I can love my neighbors just as much as I love myself. I receive Your grace to obey Your commands. I ask in faith because of the work of Jesus, amen.

Mark 12:28-34

One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” “The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” “Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions.
