In this passage, Jesus reminds us that God’s priorities often look different from ours. The Pharisees clung to rules while missing the heart of God’s law—love, mercy, and justice. This prayer invites us to ask God for discernment so we can invest our energy in the things that matter most to Him. As you read and pray, may you be encouraged to share this with someone who could use a fresh reminder of God’s priorities.

Prayer

Father, the Pharisees were unable to prioritize Your law. They were unable to discern the difference between customs, love, justice and mercy (Matthew 23:23). Their hearts had no scale to weigh out the weightier issues of morality and ethics. They placed a high priority on ideas You placed a low priority on. They gave a low priority to the ideas You gave a high priority to. I cannot jeopardize making such a mistake. I need Your grace to assist me in prioritizing the things that are important in Your economy. Break the temptation to prioritize obedience based on my strengths, and thus bolstering my self-righteousness. Direct the bulk of my time, energy, efforts and resources into Your high priorities in Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

Mark 2:23-37

One Sabbath, Jesus and His disciples walked through grainfields. The disciples began picking heads of grain, and the Pharisees accused them of breaking the Sabbath law. Jesus reminded them of how David once ate the consecrated bread when he and his companions were hungry, something only priests were permitted to eat. He explained that the Sabbath was made for people, not people for the Sabbath, highlighting the priority of human need over rigid legalism.
