In Mark 9:2–29, Jesus leads Peter, James, and John up the mountain where His glory is revealed—but immediately after the mountaintop moment, they descend into a valley of spiritual battle and human desperation. This prayer invites us to seek both the glory of His presence and the strength to serve in the valley. May these words help you hunger for holy encounters that prepare you to confront darkness with faith and authority. If this prayer speaks to you, please share it so others can be encouraged to seek God’s presence and carry His power into everyday life.
Prayer
Father, send me to the mountaintop. Give me a new experience in Your glory. Reveal to me greater insight into the personhood of Jesus and his glory. Speak to me. Put the fear of You within every cell of my body. Let me tremble in Your power. Give me an encounter I cannot deny so I can go into the valley full of faith, power and love. From my mountaintop experiences equip me to drive out the demonic hoards that harass humanity. Give me the power to drive out wickedness that others have failed to deal with. Empower me on the mountain to bring healing to the incurable in the valley. Give me the history with You that emboldens me. May my times of prayer and fasting drive out unbelief and prepare me to deal with difficult demons. I ask this for Your glory and for Your fame in Jesus’ name, amen.
Mark 9:2-29
Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with Him and led them up a high mountain where they were alone. There, Jesus was transfigured before them—His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them. Elijah and Moses appeared and were talking with Jesus. Peter, overwhelmed and unsure of what to say, suggested putting up three shelters for Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my Son, whom I love. Listen to Him!” Suddenly, they looked around and saw only Jesus with them.
As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. The disciples discussed among themselves what “rising from the dead” might mean and asked why the teachers of the law say Elijah must come first. Jesus replied that Elijah does come first and restores all things, but He also said that the Scriptures speak of the Son of Man suffering and being rejected. He told them that Elijah had already come, and people did to him whatever they wished, just as it was written.
When they returned to the rest of the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and teachers of the law arguing with them. As soon as the people saw Jesus, they were amazed and ran to greet Him. Jesus asked what they were arguing about. A man from the crowd answered, saying he had brought his son, who was possessed by a spirit that robbed him of speech. Whenever the spirit seized the boy, it slammed him to the ground, and the boy would foam at the mouth, grind his teeth, and become rigid. He said he asked Jesus’ disciples to drive out the spirit, but they could not. Jesus responded, “You unbelieving generation, how long shall I stay with you? How long shall I put up with you? Bring the boy to Me.”
They brought the boy, and when the spirit saw Jesus, it immediately threw the boy into a convulsion. He fell to the ground, rolling and foaming at the mouth. Jesus asked the boy’s father how long this had been happening, and he said, “Since childhood. It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if You can do anything, take pity on us and help us.” Jesus replied, “‘If You can’? Everything is possible for the one who believes.” Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
Seeing a crowd running toward them, Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, saying, “You deaf and mute spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.” The spirit shrieked, convulsed the boy violently, and came out. The boy looked so much like a corpse that many said he was dead. But Jesus took him by the hand, lifted him up, and he stood. After Jesus had gone indoors, His disciples asked Him privately why they couldn’t drive it out. Jesus replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”
