In Mark 2:13–17, Jesus breaks religious convention and sits with sinners, not out of compromise, but out of compassion. This passage reveals His heart for the broken and His mission to restore. The prayer that follows flows from this same desire—to step beyond the bubble of Christian comfort and embody Christ’s love for the hurting. If you feel stirred to love more deeply and fast from self-righteousness, let this prayer lead your response.

If this prayer speaks to you, share it and bring someone else into the mission.

Prayer

Jesus, help me to break out of my Christian bubble. You came for the sick not the healthy. I repent for not loving those different from me. Break my heart over the people who are being ravished by sin. Fill me with compassion for them. I repent of the religious snobbery that’s horrified to associate with people who walk in sin. I’ll go to them in love; anoint me to bring Your healing balm to them. Just as You identified with sinful man at Your baptism, may my life be a living illustration of Your identification with us. I long to be the personification of Your love. Fill Your willing vessel with Your love. I pray this in Your name, amen.

Mark 2:13-17

Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him. While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
