Pain can strip us of words. When we’re suffering, betrayed or broken, it’s hard to know how to pray—let alone how to hope. Psalm 137 speaks from that very place: exile, sorrow, anger, and despair. It’s raw. It’s honest. It reminds us that God does not require polished prayers—He welcomes the truth of our pain.
This prayer and passage are for the days when joy feels impossible and bitterness threatens to take root. In praying through this psalm, we acknowledge our suffering and ask God to meet us in it. We cry out not just in grief, but with the faint hope that He sees, He hears, and He will restore.
Prayer
Father, I loathe my pain and anguish. Sometimes life is more than I can bear. I detest my oppressors! I hate the people that have stolen from me and invaded my world. Yet this is my lot in life. Life is bitter, let me see hope again in Jesus’ name, amen.
Psalms 137:1-9
By the rivers of Babylon we sat and wept when we remembered Zion. There on the poplars we hung our harps, for there our captors asked us for songs, our tormentors demanded songs of joy; they said, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!” How can we sing the songs of the Lord while in a foreign land? If I forget you, Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not consider Jerusalem my highest joy.
Remember, Lord, what the Edomites did on the day Jerusalem fell. “Tear it down,” they cried, “tear it down to its foundations!” Daughter Babylon, doomed to destruction, happy is the one who repays you according to what you have done to us. Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks.
